The 2013 Inky Awards Longlist has been announced!

The Inky Awards are hosted by the Inside A Dog website, run by the State Library’s Centre for Youth Literature. These annual prizes are given to International (Silver Inky) and Australian (Gold Inky) authors for the best book of the year as voted by the readers themselves. The process goes roughly like this:

First, readers nominate books for the award by filling out an online nomination form. From the nominated books a longlist of 10 international and 10 Aussie books is chosen by the Inside a Dog Team. At the same time there is a call for teen judges. This is when kids who are keen readers and want to be judges apply for the job – it usually happens in March and April. Once the judges are selected they are given the awesome job of reading ALL 20 nominated titles and debating which are the best with fellow teen judges. This results in a Shortlist of 5 international and 5 Australian books – and I must say it’s usually a pretty hot list! Checkout last year’s here. This is when the online voting begins and anyone aged between 12 and 20 can vote once for their preferred Gold and Silver Inky winner. The votes are counted and voilà – we have a winner! (Well, two actually.)

So anyhoo, the Longlist for the 2013 Inkys was unveiled at the Reading Matters conference in Melbourne on Saturday 1st June, which I was fortunate enough to attend and I’d like to share it with you now. The longlist for the 2013 Inky Awards are:
